I get the absolute creepiest vibe from this whole place. It is a trap, a tourist trap. You get about two minutes looking at animals as they rush you through the nice part of the park until they dump you in this chaotic area with a bunch of creepy old men holding wads of cash. They do not accept anything but cash.
I strongly encourage anyone who goes to check out the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site next door as well. It's a supremely well run and fascinating trek through the history of President Grant.
I went to Grant's Farm with my parents all the time when I was young. I finally took my own daughter a few weeks ago and it was everything I remember and more! Deer Park is stunningly beautiful and allows you to see species from all over the world. The experience of walking up to a camel and having him eat out of your hand was incredible. My daughter couldn't believe it. We also had the opportunity to ride a camel as well, which was amazing! The goats were a little aggressive for my taste, but they do warn you before you go in the pen to bottle feed them (I probably won't do that part again). Parking was a little pricey, but again, I knew this beforehand and it was completely worth every penny. Overall, I was blown away by everything Grant's Farm has to offer. It's only gotten better with time. I also want to note how well taken care of the animals appear to be - all of them looked happy and healthy, which is the most important thing, in my mind, about a place like this.
We absolutely love Grants Farm and are regulars.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and post a negative review of a beloved St. Louis icon. I came here as a kid and just had a terrible time. I hated it. I could not remember why and thought I must be imagining it, so I took my son there recently. It was just as awful as I remember.
The goats seem to me to be intentionally malnourished. There are always a lot of really young goats - no older goats. What do they do to them? Why are the little goats so hungry? It is supposed to be cute, but it is actually really creepy. All of the animals seem to be neglected and suffering. The rides are dilapidated and falling apart.
Free beers for the 21+ crowd, good food, and a decent variety of shows and attractions make it a great afternoon getaway.
When you want to leave, you can't. You have to wait for a tram. You cannot just walk out. It felt like a power play meant to keep people spending money. Disgusting.
Overall, worth the wait. We arrived to find a 30 minute wait to park, a 30 minute wait to get into the farm, and a 20 minute wait to get on the tram to actually go inside. Once inside though, it's quite enjoyable. The Tram conductors were funny but very informative. Animals were in arm's reach. Once at the main area off the tram, there is goat feeding, a carousel, animals shows, concessions, and more. I thought it would be more crowded than it was. Then on the way out, you are able to sample two adult beverages which was a nice way to end the trip.
I know that a lot of people have a great time here but I would not come back in a million years if my life depended on it. These reasons alone may not suffice, but I will just say that I trust my instincts and my instincts are telling me that this place is creepy AF!
Highly recommend the whole trip!
If you are visiting St. Louis, I urge you to take the time to visit Grant's Farm!
First timers need to understand that you will probably wait for parking and to get in the park. The shuttle from the entrance to the main area can also take some time. Once you get past that it is a fantastic experience.
Great experience! We have two small kids are 1.5 and 3.5. The lines were not bad at all. The tram takes you through the park to see the animals. There were things you could pay for like the milk for the goats but you could pet them for free. Nothing cost more than a few dollars. The elephant show is free. My suggestion would be to book it through the park to the end and get your free beer and then walk backwards as they let you walk around with it.
